THE COMPETITION FILMS
These films were selected by the student panel as pieces that demonstrate an incredible appreciation for the art of filmmaking. We invite you to experience the pain of unrequited love, the drive of a man reformed, the terrible power of envy, the simple joy of the pursuit, and the wonderful, often overwhelming, filmmaking process. For over a century, determined men and women have been capturing the human experience on film to inspire and teach us. These five films continue that marvelous tradition. Enjoy!
GOOD CAKE / KYLE KELLEY / ITHACA COLLEGE
When four fifth graders are given the opportunity to make a film, the results are interesting, frustrating, and hilarious. A fun exploration of the psychology of fifth grade boys, and a self reflexive look into the filmmaking process.
SAM THE SUPER STICKY / GEORGE THORMAN / DARTMOUTH COLLEGE
This animated short depicts the epic mini-adventure of the world’s first sticky-Note hero, Sam. When Sam’s leisurely stroll is interrupted by the hungry Dino-sticky he must outwit his belligerent pursuer or else succumb to his carnivorous jaws. This film was created using an experimental mix of “hand-drawn” and “stop-motion” animation techniques. It was filmed with the support of Professor David Ehrlich at Dartmouth College in 2009.
FLASHBULBS POP / ELIZABETH BARKER / NEW YORK UNIVERSITY
Talent is one thing, but image is everything. As a professional photographer, this is something that Monica should have come to realize long ago. But when she finds the very ways in which she defines herself threatened - her talent, her relationships, even her hat - by an up and coming model, she steps out from behind the lens and takes drastic action.
IN TRAINING / JUSTIN HACKMAN / AMERICAN UNIVERSITY
A 28 minute documentary by Justin Hackman. Kenny Browne is an amateur boxer living in Washington DC. His desire to rectify a past life of crime is only rivaled by his desire to turn professional.
BASIC FRENCH / JORDAN BLAKE / BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY
Boy likes girl…
