Who We Are
The Dartmouth Independent is an online news source serving Dartmouth College and the Upper Valley region of New Hampshire and Vermont. We are committed to community-centered journalism that covers campus and local issues with balance and independence.
In an era of declining independent journalism, we aim to preserve a legacy of thoughtful discourse while amplifying diverse community voices and stories.
Our History
Original Launch (2004)
Three founding editors—Anoop Rathod, Michael Greene, and Pooneet Kant—established The Dartmouth Independent in fall 2004. Their founding mission was clear: "offer an alternative to the extreme polarization of current campus political publications."
The founders structured an editorial board distributed across the political spectrum and emphasized balanced coverage through point-counterpoint formats. They chose an online-only model to reduce costs and enable frequent updates—a forward-thinking approach for 2004.
First Run (2004–2013)
The publication maintained its original structure for nearly a decade, covering campus politics, culture, and student life. The last sustained activity occurred in spring 2013, after which the organization experienced sporadic activity with no consistent presence.
2025 Relaunch
The Independent relaunched in fall 2025 as a full regular publication. The relaunch includes restoration of all archived content from its original run, an expanded mission beyond campus politics to include local Upper Valley news, and a focus on serving both the college and surrounding community.
